Hi-Technique: Beyond The Glass Wall

Art show recap

Female street artist/skateboard collective called Few and Far; a Few talented and dedicated painters spread Far across the country. Their west coast members planned to road trip north this summer with Seattle as the one of their destinations, so of course something big had to happen here. That’s where Bombsheller came in. We agreed to host a show for them and call it Hi-Technique: Beyond the Glass Wall, a play on our obsession with hi-tech and their ambitions to go beyond the glass walls of the gallery art world, beyond the glass wall of the male dominated graffiti community, and beyond the glass wall of the retail fashion industry.

On Wednesday june 18th, while the girls painted a mural on Mud Bay’s wall with the help of local artists John Osgood and Jonathan Wakuda, Bomb Sheller opened our doors to the Uptown Art Walk to showcase their work on our walls. This was good fun, but it was merely a preview for the grander invitation-only event set to take place Friday June 20th.

There was a DJ, bomb themed booze, a juice mixologist, and seventy pounds of food. The Few and Far members showing art that night – Dime, Deity, Meme, Merlot, and 179 — showed up with their nails painted to match their leggings. MADlines rocked an a cappella performance and didn’t miss a beat when Meme joined the stage to battle with her own rhymes! When the DJ’s set was up, we put on salsa tracks and danced. Everyone stayed an hour past the official end time.

Once a Mission Girl, Always a Mission Girl

“Once A Mission Girl, Always A Mission Girl” from SV De-Bug on Vimeo.

13 year old Ana Nicole diosdado Gonzalez is a young aspiring photographer. With her family facing eviction from her childhood home of 14 years, she takes us down a walk through 24th Street, catching photos of what will become memories of a neighborhood that she is forced to leave.
Like many families, artists, and children who’ve built the Mission District to what it’s culture has become, a lot of them are facing eviction.

“All the “creative cities” that have managed to successfully destroy and/or evict their working class have ultimately been condemned to doom. And soon, they will wake up to an ocean of sameness.- An excerpt from Guillermo Gomez Pena’s “A Heartfelt Letter To Rene Yanez and The SF arts Community”

Ages Served
Girls ages 9 to 24; Afterschool 9 to 14

Description
Mission Girls is an afterschool and summer program targeted to Latina girls. Activities include homework help, journal writing, reading groups, creative writing workshops, career exploration, health education workshops, cooking classes, sports and fitness, cultural arts and crafts, ethnic dance, and participation in cultural community events and outings.

Mission Girls’ Young Queens on the Rise program is a gender specific group for girls that have been involved in the Juvenile Justice System, or for those who engage in “at-risk” behaviors. The girls are either court mandated or referred by an agency or community member. The goal is to promote self esteem, enhance academic performance, develop leadership abilities, anti-violence education, and empower young women to make positive choices in their lives. The group is also linked with an Intensive Case Management component which is part of the Mission Girls center. The program hosts All-Nighters twice a month on Fridays, an alternative event for “at-risk” girls to begin their weekend on a positive path.

Mission Girls provides Intensive Case Management for girls ages 13 and up, who have been involved in the Juvenile Justice System, who engage in “at-risk” behavior, and/or have low academic performance. Case managers require at least two one-on-one meetings with clients for one hour minimum, depending on their level. The services offered are court and youth advocacy, goal development, school visits, home visits, and life skills training.

The Mission of SEA Of DREAMS NYE is to create the perfect celebration, an evening that you will remember fondly for the rest of your life. Make no mistake: our goal IS PERFECTION, and by chasing perfection we have been fortunate enough to catch EXCELLENCE, perhaps even TRANSCENDENCE. We create an experience that is unparalleled in artistic content, spectacle, music, and production value. We consider your satisfaction in our efforts to be a sacred responsibility, and we spare no expense or effort to give you that lasting positive memory. We understand that for a myriad of reasons, our community holds New Years Eve in a special place. Completion; Celebration; A renewal of goals and dreams; These are all a major part of the NYE process and we want to provide you with a setting to do all of these things that is thought, body, and soul provoking. Ours may not be the “biggest” NYE party in the world, the state, or even the city, but our mission is to work 365 days every year to make it the BEST.

SEA OF DREAMS NYE is committed to fostering innovative and expressive human community in all its myriad forms. We are a part of the neighborhoods in which we live and work. We believe in the grander purposes of art, music and science and in the generosity of spirit that makes all of that possible. We are forever beholding to you who attend our events, for trusting us to provide you with the best experience it is within our power to create. The aims of great art and collective ritual celebrations, are in our view, part of the larger human movement towards expanding social justice, open education and conscious evolution. We are grateful for the chance to share this experience with you.

Few and Far bring Warrior Women to Art Basel Miami 2013!

Few&Far just returned from Art Basel Miami, where we represented Ecuador, California, Florida and New York City. We ended up scoring a bigger and more prominent wall than originally planned in central Wynwood, painting the outside of a slot machine refurbishing factory. Big thanks to the owners of the building, our sponsors Ironlak and Luna Rienne Gallery, and photographer Alexadra Henry! Being one of the few all-women walls in Wynwood this year, we got lots of great feedback, and our uniquely different strong feminine styles meshed together seamlessly on a Miami-turquoise background that popped for blocks. Four large female characters by Kazilla, Ursula X Young, Toofly, Deity, and lettering by Agana now grace the walls of 375 NW 24th street on a mural entitled “Warrior Women”. Incidentally this year ‘Wynwood Walls’ showcased women artists, including Toofly, in their gallery show: ‘Women on the Walls’. This was an important year for the women of Few&Far to be representing. The wall is dedicated to the legendary Nelson Mandela, who passed away at the start of the project. Thank you again to all who joined and supported!

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
― Nelson Mandela

As the skate jam drew to a close, down time was limited and a second wind was necessary for the after party activities.
